Zero Click Doesn't Mean Zero Interaction — It Means a New Canvas

Most searches now end without a click. That sounds alarming only if the click was the goal. It wasn't. The goal was to be considered, trusted and chosen.

WPP Media offers the clearest framing of the shift: zero click does not mean zero interaction. People still discover brands, compare options and form preferences. The interaction remains. Only the surface has changed.

Brands can earn that exposure without paying for every visit. After a decade of rising cost-per-click, that is an opportunity worth taking seriously.

The journey collapsed into one step

Take a product launch. The old path ran from search to homepage, product page and stockist. An AI answer can put the product, evidence and next step together. The same compression helps a law firm, clinic or SaaS company when a buyer wants a shortlist rather than ten tabs.

WPP's Global Head of Search, Katelyn Taylor, describes the AI response as "a net new surface on the Internet for creating branded experiences." The brands that supply clear facts, useful explanations and trusted evidence can help shape how their category is described there.

  • Feed the canvas. Models work with available evidence. Accurate entity data, clear service or product information and first-party sources worth quoting provide it.
  • Measure outcomes, not clickstream. These interactions don't show up in traditional analytics. Move the scorecard to business results, branded demand and visibility inside answers.
  • Treat search as the intent layer. It's no longer one channel among many; it's the layer that captures need across the whole journey. Show up there and the rest of the funnel gets easier.

Brands are not passengers in this shift. Strong SEO still provides most of the foundation; clearer entities, citable pages and consistent third-party signals help that foundation travel into AI answers.
