68% of Searches End Without a Click — And That's Good News

Zero click searches — the ones that end without anybody visiting a website — now account for around 68% of all Google searches, according to Similarweb's clickstream data. A decade ago that figure sat closer to 45%. Most of the acceleration has landed in the last two years, as AI Overviews spread across the results page.

That sounds like lost demand only if the click was the goal. It was not. The goal was to be considered, trusted and chosen. The click was evidence of that journey, not the journey itself.

What actually changed

Search is now an answer layer as well as a directory. Brands are described, compared and recommended before a visitor arrives. For most organisations, that high-intent surface is still unmanaged.

Similarweb makes a useful comparison: a billboard does not send a click either. Zero click marketing treats the answer itself as valuable placement rather than a failed referral.

Where the upside sits

  • Free placement in the highest-intent moment there is. Being named inside an answer costs nothing per impression. You're not bidding for it, and your competitors mostly aren't organised enough to contest it yet.
  • Fewer, better visitors. When the answer filters out the browsers and the tyre-kickers, the people who do arrive already know who you are and what you do. Sessions fall; conversion rate usually rises.
  • Authority compounds instead of decaying. A cited explanation, a piece of original data, a clearly attributed expert view — these keep getting pulled into answers long after a paid campaign has stopped running.

The honest catch

The measurement has to widen. Track share of voice in AI answers, branded search demand, direct traffic quality and assisted conversions alongside sessions and click-through rate.

Start with the fundamentals. Around 90% of AI visibility still rests on strong SEO: crawlable pages, sound indexation, useful content, clear entities and trusted links. Then check how the major models describe you and fix what is thin, outdated or wrong.
